I've got a story that's relevant to this community, but it might not seem that way at first. I'll try to make it not a meandering mess.
I used to teach math to college students. There's an old "trick" that college students spread that says "If everyone gets up and leaves, the teacher has to end the class early."
Well, I had students that did that to me. Half the class just got up and left twenty minutes early. I knew about the "trick", so I just kept teaching. Then they did it a second time, so at the end of the class, for the remaining students that did not leave, I gave them a password, "Hilbert". Then on the test, I had an extra question worth ten bonus points: "What is the password?".
I didn't have a problem with students leaving early after that, but, the reason why I bring it up here is because of this:
One of the students gave me the Konami code. I laughed hysterically (which is very much needed during grading, I can assure you). Then I gave him two points.
Additionally, it may interest people to know that you can get Contra DRM-free from Gog.com (link below) to play on Windows machines (and maybe through Wine, but I wouldn't count on that). It's worth taking note of the reviews-- People are saying it's not emulated well! But it also may be worth the risk, especially since it's very cheap.

This is a not-quite-official announcement of the Discord server I just created. Completely free. Don't need to be a supporter on Locals. Don't even need to be a member.
It's definitely not a secret that this community hasn't been active since Matt Hartley hasn't been involved. I think there are a few reasons why (one being that I had a lot less time to devote to it than I realized), and I think that making a completely free alternative would help, and I unfortunately don't think I can do that on Locals! You have to pay if you want to post. Discord should be free (unless I did it wrong).
Feel free to come join! It's still kind of experimental at this point, and I don't know how well I'll handle content moderation, which will probably be the biggest challenge.
